Medicinal plants have played an important role in traditional healthcare systems for centuries and continue to be widely used in many communities around the world. This conceptual review examines the role of medicinal plants in traditional healthcare, focusing on their historical significance, commonly recognized therapeutic applications, and continuing relevance in modern society. Traditional knowledge has contributed to the identification and use of numerous plants for managing common health conditions and supporting general well-being. The paper also discusses the potential benefits of medicinal plants, including their accessibility, cultural importance, and contribution to the development of pharmaceutical research. However, the use of medicinal plants also presents challenges related to quality control, correct identification, dosage, safety, possible drug interactions, and the need for scientific validation. The review emphasizes that traditional knowledge and modern scientific research can complement each other when medicinal plants are studied and used responsibly. This paper concludes that medicinal plants remain a valuable area of study in pharmacy and life sciences, while evidence-based research, appropriate regulation, and professional healthcare guidance are essential for their safe and effective use.
